Last week concluded the second annual UNH-IOL Hackathon held here at the lab. The UNH-IOL hackathon is an event where programmers get together for a short period of time to collaborate on a project that will benefit the lab in some way or another. The Hackathon is a week long event for UNH student employees to step away from their day-to-day grind and work together to provide long-term solutions for various lab wide projects. We caught up with IOL Alum, Andrew Wood, who was a donor in the annual UNH 603 Challenge to the IOL Gift Fund. Andrew worked at the lab from 2011-2014 and graduated from UNH in 2015 with his BS in Outdoor Education and went on to receive his Masters in Educational Studies in 2017. I asked Andrew why he donated to the IOL Gift Fund and what it meant to him. and now I turn it over to him (enjoy!):...

I admit when I walked into the IOL on my first day as a HighTech Bound Intern, I was nervous. When my technology teacher informed me of the internship during my junior year of high school, I had no idea that my decision to apply would help shape many of my future college decisions and life experiences.
I was eager to start my position as soon as I had discovered my acceptance. I walked into a room surrounded by...

Recently, we had a chance to catch up with IOL alum, Alan Ames, who started working at the lab in 1998 with the Ethernet testing group. During his 4-5 years at the lab he worked on MAC & Autonegotiation testing and his final project was on MMI-MAC. Alan received his Master’s degree in EE from UNH in 2005, although he spent 2 years undecided. He credits his time at the IOL for his decision to pursue a degree in EE,...

We recently invested in new test tool add-on for our WiFi Testing Service that greatly expands the wireless testing capabilities regarding performance, throughput, and quality of experience testing. The upgrade comes from OctoScope 1 which adds onto our existing two box-26 (semi-anechoic chamber) stack. The original system was used to gather data for Range Vs. Throughput testing by passing traffic through attenuation (noise in dB increments) to simulate distance using a QuadAttenuator module along with the first generation multipath emulator....

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to be a supervisor for the HighTech Bound Summer Internship Program at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL). I was very familiar with the program as I worked as an intern the summer before my freshman year at Colby College. When school ended in May, I thought to ask the IOL if they had any summer positions. I was put in touch with the Director of the IOL,...

The InterOperability Lab is an amazing place overflowing with innovation. Testing for huge companies like HP, Intel and Microsoft means that the best and brightest flock the IOL in the hopes that they can make connections with people inside these major companies. This can make the IOL seem pretty imposing, things move quickly and there is a lot of knowledge necessary to know what is happening.
When I came into the job I was completely overwhelmed. People kept talking...
