Durham, N.H., February 19, 2018 – University of New Hampshire held the first UNH 24 hour Liberty Mutual Hackathon on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), right off the UNH Durham, NH campus. The 24-hour hackathon event brought together UNH students, faculty, staff, and industry to create an innovative tech solution designed to help Liberty Mutual achieve their goal of being there when their policyholders need them most.
UNH-IOL partnered with Liberty Mutual to create an event where undergraduate students worked in teams to develop a solution that puts humans at the center of the design. Teams had the option of using Liberty Mutual's Shine API, which incorporates Liberty Mutual data, insurance core competencies, and city infrastructure data to help customers live a life without worry.

As a UNH alum I always enjoy coming back to campus and I am excited to see what the students will come up with!”
The Liberty Mutual Hackathon is designed to allow UNH students of all majors and skill levels to create and code a custom solution. Participants collaborated with Liberty Mutual staff and other computer engineers for input and suggestions as well as overall support throughout the event. All participants were judged on problem intensity, use of API services, technical robustness and usability, and pitch and demo. Each member of the top three teams received prizes ranging from $50 to $100.
“Participating at the Hackathon allowed me to work in a different team environment while giving me access to large data sets,” said Eric Smath, Computer Science at UNH and UNH-IOL employee. “I wouldn't have gotten this type of exposure in a typical classroom setting. It's exciting that Liberty Mutual and the IOL were able to give me an experience like this.”
